How is it made? We start with a block of high-quality porcelain clay. Then we carefully slice a piece off and run it through a slab roller to achieve a smooth and even texture. Once the clay has been processed, it is then cut, designed, and meticulously shaped by hand. Each piece is free formed, ensuring that every finished item is unique and truly one of a kind. The process of creating ceramic works typically involves firing the pieces twice: first, they are bisque fired at an impressive 1945 degrees Fahrenheit, followed by a glaze firing at mid-range temperatures that can reach between 2160- and 2290-degrees Fahrenheit. The primary goal of bisque firing is to convert the greenware into a durable, semi-vitrified, and porous stage, allowing it to be safely handled during the subsequent glazing and decorating process. Additionally, the clay and glazes we utilize are sourced from local materials right here in New Mexico.
